Your Procedure
Dr. Galante usually performs this surgery on an outpatient basis, which means most patients will go home the day of their procedure after recovering from the anesthesia. He typically uses general anesthesia during breast augmentation so the patient is asleep for the entire procedure. Before your procedure, Dr. Galante will thoroughly review what you can expect for recovery and results and give you plenty of time to ask any questions.
Implant Placement
During the procedure, implants are placed either above or below the pectoral (chest) muscles. Dr. Galante typically uses the sub-pectoral placement, where the breast implant is inserted beneath or between the muscles under the breast tissue. He has found that this technique provides the most natural-looking results, especially when using saline breast implants and when patients have little breast tissue of their own. It also has been found to reduce the incidence of capsular contracture (firm scar tissue around the implant).
Patients with ample breast tissue sometimes opt for having their implants placed above the muscle. This placement technique also can offer excellent results when using silicone implants.
During your private consultation, Dr. Galante will encourage you to ask questions so you fully understand how breast implant placement can affect your results. It can be helpful to review before and after photos online to see some of Dr. Galante's actual patients.
Incision Site
When performing breast augmentation in Indiana, Dr. Galante typically uses a small incision either along the breast crease, in the armpit, or around the areola to insert the breast implant. He prefers the inframammary incision (breast crease) because it is effective for all types of breast implants. Saline implants involve a smaller incision than silicone because they are filled after placement. Saline implants also offer the greatest flexibility as they can be placed using any incision location.
Regardless of incision site, Dr. Galante strives to conceal the incision as much as possible to provide very natural-looking results. These small incisions heal quickly and are designed to minimize any visible scarring.
